Hovenweep National Monument

Ravens call

Somewhere rattlesnake sleeps

Coyote leaves his trail where we can see

Remember me, remember me

We follow the Juniper tree lined wash

Past moon rocks shining in the sun

Crawl up rocks to the canyon top

To sandstone remains of villages

To petroglyphs of hands and spirals

Ravens call

Somewhere rattlesnake sleeps

Coyote leaves his trail where we can see

Remember me, remember me

We crawl back down through the valley

Air still, heavy, aromatic, sweet

One tree shudders, leaves quake

Like bones clattering, or spirits breathing

Reminding us we are not alone.
